Hide & Seek

Peek-a-boo I see you. A new Izakaya Japanese restaurant is in town and open for business. Since it’s up the street from my place, I walk by it quite often and this time, I finally decided to step in.

Kakurenbou Japanese Dining, which translates into “Hide and Seek” or “Hidden Place”, designed by the same people who did Denman Street’s Kingyo, is a sophisticated space with bar seating; heavy, dark-wood beams; and textured walls. It looks like the inside of an ancient Japanese temple.

Between two people, five small dishes are plenty to share. Some of my favorites were the house spicy pan fried udon, grilled scallops with fava beans and tuna rice paper roll.
