DIY: Jewelery Up-Keep

When you have a lot of jewelery like I do, it all tends to sit in boxes for long periods of time. Your have to make sure you take a look at them once in awhile and clean the off to make sure they stay shiny and new.

I have a quick and easy tip to help you clean your jewelery. The homemade solution can e very drying to the hands so be sure to wear rubble gloves or tweezer when handling the jewelery.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon dish detergent (liquid)
1. cup water
1 piece of aluminum foil
1 ceramic bowl (cereal bowl size)
*Makes one bowl of cleaning solution.

STEP 1: Heat the water in the bowl in the microwave for 1 - 2 minutes.

STEP 2: Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of bowl.

STEP 3: Pour the hot water into the bowl. Place the salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into the bowl. Place the jewelery into the bowl on top of the foil and let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes. With the tweezers take out the jewelery and rinse it off in cool water and dry jewelery completely with a soft cloth. Discard the solution after use.

This solution works well for gold-filled, brass, nickel silver, and sterling silver. You can also use a soft bristle toothbrush to aid in the cleaning process for tougher stains.
