When I look at movies that have been influential in fashion, I think of movies like: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Great Gatsby, Pulp Fiction, Cabaret and most currently, Sex and The City. I know that there have been countless others, but I would like to make a special mention of Grey Gardens. Although the characters of the movie seem to be feathers of a different bird, the real-life looks are inspiring.
If you haven’t seen the original 1975 Grey Gardens, you must go out and rent it asap! Directed by Albert and David Maysles, the film takes an insider’s look at the life of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith “Edie” Bouvier Beale. They were Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ aunt and first cousin, respectively and they went from being socialites to living in squalor.
Hollywood’s take of the legendary mother-daughter duo on HBO, made a small screen debut Saturday, April 18th starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. The wardrobing was amazing and the art direction on point. (Not to mention, I believe both actresses gave award winning performances).
The HBO version showcases the Beales’ standout sartorial and quirky flair. Certain items that stand out: Brooches, scarves, fur coats, tulip skirts, floral patterns, large brimmed hats, bib necklaces, kimono robes, waist belts and capes.
After watching Grey Gardens, I was inspired to create a collage of the fashion looks that inspire me. How does the movie inspire you?
