Hailing from Toronto, Wendy Wong is a force to be reckon with. What you will find in her clothing line, House of Spy are edgy feminine shapes and bold flirty colors. Here is your ‘Industry Insider’ this week:
Where did the name House of Spy come from?: I originally wanted to call it Spy, but it was taken, not just taken by one company, Spy was used for everything from sunglasses, to movie houses to obviously spy equipment - it was everywhere!
House of Spy was a cheeky take on the couture houses like House of Dior and House of Chanel since my label was very indie/underground street-wear and definitely not anywhere close to being a famous “house” of anything!
How did you get into what you are doing now?: During a Christmas break I learned to sew from my mom, I loved it! Here was a way to have clothes that nobody else did, I spent those 2 weeks living between fabricland and the sewing machine room. I had no intentions of making it more than a hobby.
While studying Biology at the University of Toronto, I took a part time job as a receptionist at the International Academy of Design and Technology. Discovering one of the perks of the job was free courses and I wasted no time getting stuck into pattern drafting and clothing construction courses. By my second year, in the war between science and fashion, fashion was definitely winning. I finished up my degree and got straight to work designing clothes.
What jewelry style are you?: Go bold or go home! I love multi-layer, multi-chain necklaces and long dangly earrings. I don’t ever wear delicate (no Tiffany’s for me) and for some reason only like to wear earrings and necklaces, I can’t do rings or bracelets because I fidget with them all day long.
What was your last read?: My Lonely Planet Thailand since it’s going to be a vacation destination.
Your most precious item?: My business. Please don’t tell my boyfriend!
Are you a sweet or savory kind of girl?: Savory. French fries and I have a love-hate relationship
What is your favourite SS 09 trend and what is your least favourite?: Fave - drapey jumpsuits (the full pant kind). Least fave - those damn drop crotch pants need to go away!
One lesson you have learned and will never forget?: If you want it, go for it. What are you waiting for?
Tell us one thing most people assume about what you do for a living that
is complete false: That I make a lot of money and spend my days doing glamorous things!
What trend should we never bring back?: Crocs and rat tails.
