When I found out Tim Burton was re-doing the Lewis Carrol classic “Alice in Wonderland”, I knew that fashion trends inspired by this story would re-appear for Spring/Summer 2010. Many have already taken this enchanting story of a little girl falling down the rabbit hole as their “muse”. The always late white Rabbit and his pocket watch, the snarly Queen of Hearts, the hookah smoking talking Caterpillar, the crazy Mad-Hatter and of course darling Alice; all iconic and inspiring characters. The story definitely makes for some kooky and far out trends.
Who can forget Annie Leibovtiz’s and Grace Coddington’s Vogue US December 2003 fashion editorial spread? What about Gwen Stefani’s 2004 music video for, “What You Waiting For”? In 2008, Alice + Olivia displayed their Spring/Summer collection at New York Fashion Week surrounded in an Wonderland theme.
This Spring/Summer 2010 designers have joined the tea party once again. Luella displayed big bows in the hair with hint of “Alice blue” in their dresses. Vivienne Westwood took the neo-goth, Victorian mix-match to another level by injecting the pale faces, bright hair and even top hats.
Needless to say, some of the fashion trends don’t seem to make any sense. We’re simply throwing in some bows, ruffles, bold colors, antique jewelry and adding in a bunny or a cat into a bag and giving it a good shake. But in the words of Alice herself….
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see” - Alice In Wonderland
