I had the pleasure of previewing a documentary film on a legendary and humble New York street style photographer, Bill Cunningham. To this very day at 82 years old, he rides his Schwinn bicycle around New York city searching for the “fashion”. He’s been a prominent fashion photographer for over 50 plus years and he’s seen fashion trends turn a few times over.
The New York Times photographer shoots and curates the paper’s “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” photo columns and he does this all on film and with such passion. After watching the documentary you’ll immediately fall in love with his kind demeanor and his ear to ear smile. He truly lives for fashion and loves his job and money has never been a motivator for him. “Don’t ever let them own you”, says Bill.
We can all learn a thing or two from Bill Cunningham on how he conducts himself in a fickle industry. Bill Cunningham New York, the documentary launches April 22, Friday at Tinseltown Theatres, Vancouver BC.
Many thanks to Fashion Magazine, Eco-Fashion Week,The Georgia Street, Fashion Television and Holt Renfrew for being wonderful hosts.
