The “Penny”

Preppy style never really dies; I consider it a classic look. The last time I wore penny loafers was in the late 80’s and early 90’s and I was wearing the original Bass Weejuns. It seems like the “preppy” look of penny loafers and driving mocs just made itself an excuse to come back into fashion years later.

Everyone is sporting the cool boarding school look and the penny loafer is poised to be the center of attention. On top of your traditional black and burgundy leather penny’s, it’s taking on new forms and coloration’s for 2011. Here are some top looks to watch for:

I found a pair of Crown Vintage tan penny’s at DSW. I’ve been practically living in them because  they are so comfortable since the leather is worn, distressed and un-lined. I even put pennies in them. The story goes, that fathers use to make their daughters place a “coin” in their loafers so that they would be able to make a phone call home from a date. Either way, I think it looks more authentic with a cooper penny in the slit.

Colorful suedes are a fun way to update the traditional penny. TOD’S displays a perfect example of this with their suede penny driving moccasin, all made on TOD’S unique “pebble” sole.

You can also take penny loafers to whole new heights and be sky high in these Miu Miu patent penny heels.

Any way you decide to wear them, just do so because the penny loafer is the casual shoe must have in your 2011 wardrobe.
