Macy’s location on 34th Street is getting a re-do and we are talking a massive $400 million investment of their flagship store in New York City. The plan is to be more focused on more upscale food eateries, the implementation of better technology and most importantly a re-vamp of the shoe department. (So exciting).

Yes, the already crazy busy shoe department of Macy’s is getting a multi-year renovation, expanding the second floor women’s shoe department to 39,000 square feet and it will also feature a coffee, wine and chocolate bar. What can get any better, have I died and gone to heaven? Shoes, coffee, wine and chocolate - All on one floor. It’s absolutely indulgent and over the top but it’s also a very logical plan.

How did you get into what you are doing now?: As a kid I was inspired by my father and his love of using only the best graphic art tools. I was spoiled with using Pantone felt pens on quality vellum while my kindergarten classmates played with Crayola on craft paper. My artistic side was influenced by my father who was a graphic designer and technical drawing specialist for Albertan Oil companies, developing machinery in the tradition of manual drafting before computer software. As a Footwear Buyer I deal with a variety of people everyday and dealing with people effectively is crucial to success. Not only do I need to manage my relationships at the office, I also need to effectively manage my relationships with my vendors. No one role is more important than the other and most times ego can get in the way of furthering a working relationship. I’ve heard horror stories of “buyers” that act like royalty and make unrealistic demands of their vendors and it’s very one-sided. This isn’t the type of relationship that lasts and it can be detrimental to your reputation.
