Scandinavian cocktails, cashmere blankets and no choice but to huddle up close for heat and warmth - sounds like the perfect date venue to me.
Welcome to Polar, a new underground lounge that just opened its doors in New York underneath Gramercy’s Marcel Hotel. A swanky ice den of sorts, you can sip on drinks like Operation Highjump (Reyka Icelandic Vodka, Frozen Grapes, White Grape Juice and Pear Eau de Vie) while sharing an appetizer like Truffle Egg Toast.
Tuck away by drawing down the curtains in a private VIP ice cave - decked with mirrors cozy couches, and plush pillows. Perfect for some not so private PDA.
Polar, at the Marcel, 201 E. 24th St, nr. Third Ave.; reservations@nycpolar.com

Upon moving to New York for school, a classmate of mine recommended Uniqlo, the Japanese minimalist store when I eyed her fabulous skinny jeans. Their 1st US store is here in New York, right in the heart of SoHo. Coincidentally, our then brand management professor had just issued us a case study on them. Uniqlo’s concept is one of “unbranded” apparel, much like MUJI. Their apparel is minimalistic and a perfect place to shop for basics. It’s much like an Asian version of the Gap except the focus is on fun, simple & modern apparel. You’ll rarely see patterns but rather bright bold colors and classic pieces you’ll always wear, nothing too trendy or fashion forward. My personal favourites are their merino wool cardigans, skinny jeans, leggings, Uniqlo’s HEATTECH technology turtlenecks … more …
I finally was able to view ‘The September Issue’ as I’ve always had a little crush on Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue. All in all, the fashion documentary of the ‘ice queen’ was everything that I expected. It moved slowly, but you really got the true sense of the power Wintour has on the fashion industry, being a prominent decision maker and driver of business. She’s a perfectionist through and through and can single handily be responsible for the success or failure of a designer.
Here are some memorable moments and quotes that stood out and made me laugh:
“That font is so big it’s for blind people”, as she is reviewing the Sienna Miller cover choices.
She walks into the YSL Fall presentation and was a little unimpressed … more …
Mac & Cheese: for some the ultimate comfort food, for others reminiscent of childhood but macbar is not for kids. It’s mac & cheese for adults! The sister restaurant to Delicatessen, this little yellow joint makes me smile the minute I step in. Modern and well organized in a small space, this take-out joint is VERY yellow but in a cute, happy kind of way. Great for takeouts, quickie lunches and late night suppers.
Their menu is fairly extensive, filled with varieties of mac & cheese combinations, a far cry from the instant Kraft kind. I went with mac ‘shroom ($9.99) - roasted “magic” mushrooms, fontina, mascarpone & truffled essence. My girlfriend had the mayan chipotle ($9.50)- chicken Diablo, Chihuahua cheese & green onions. We both ordered the medium, which comes … more …
Public Relations for food, fashion, art, and design…who are you going to call on? Shannon Heth. She is your Partly Sunny Industry Insider this week.
Tell us about yourself. How did Heth PR come about?: I always had an interest in public relations. For a number of years I handled PR for friends and special events, sometimes for free, just to get my feet wet. In 2007 I went to New York and worked at a boutique PR firm there. When I returned to Vancouver in 2008, HethPR as it is now, was born.
Things you love about what you do?: I’ve always loved meeting and talking to people. The great things about what I do is that everyday it’s pretty likely that I’m going to talk to new people, hear new … more …
